Lake Arenal Region
Lake Arenal is situated in the northern highlands of Costa Rica, in the provinces of Guanacaste and Alajuela. It is located in the Arenal Tilaran Conservation Area, and is close to the Arenal Volcano and Monteverde cloud forest. The lake was expanded in 1979 and is approximately 30 km long and almost 5 km at its widest point, making it the largest lake in Costa Rica at 85-square-kilometre (33 sq mi). Its depth varies between 30 and 60 meters (100–200 feet) depending on the season.
Also, looming above the landscape at the east end of the lake, is the 5,479-foot Volcan Arenal, a cone-shaped volcano that is active but not dangerous. A side benefit from the volcanic activity is that thermal hot springs abound in the area. The mineral-rich waters, naturally heated to upwards of 38°C (100° F), are said to have medicinal properties in regards to arthritis and other ailments.
Toucan Lane is located on the lake, 5 miles outside the small town of Nuevo Arenal. It is a beautiful, tranquil rain forest location with spellbinding views of Lake Arenal, the mountains, and our gardens.
